                                                                                        The reluctant reader

The problem with getting older children to read is often a result of the books for their age-group not having the same bright illustrations that they have been used to. The children often think that these books are boring or too difficult to read and cannot be bothered to put in the effort they think is required.

My own (success) story in getting my youngest child to read was with bribery. I told her that I would bring back her favourite sweets if she read two chapters of a Harry Potter book, which she was adamant that she wouldn’t like. She read it, loved it and has now read all of them, twice over.

A friend told her children that they could stay up for an extra 15 minutes in the evenings if they read a book. They were happy with that arrangement and reading has now become part of their evening routine.
