The importance of reading

The ability to read well is essential if a child wants to succeed in school as pupils with poor reading skills will find it difficult to follow         lessons and manage homework

The more fluent children are in their reading the quicker they can understand and learn new concepts as they do not need to         concentrate on each word they read but can focus on the meaning of the text

A confident reader can understand the questions in test and exam papers and may have an advantage over a hesitant reader with         more knowledge about the subject itself

A pupil with high potential in maths might fail because of poor reading skills as maths questions can often be long and complicated

Poor reading skills can lead to low self-esteem which can develop into a poor attitude to school

Birgitta tutored my son with reading and handwriting last year. She not only taught him how to read the words but also how to change tone when approaching commas, full stops and exclamation marks. This made a huge difference to his reading as the words became sentences.

Birgitta managed very quickly to change his scribbles into proper handwriting.” Thank you.”  J
